Don't be scared of using black blacks for really dark shadows!

To help with your shading, draw (preferably from life - it can be anything) on a coloured bit of paper for some mid-tone. Then use black to pick out the darkest areas and white to bring out the strongest highlights and from there you can fill in everything in between using your paper as the mid-tone.
